Competition Rules

Competitions

Each season there will normally be 11 photographic competitions and an audio visual competition.

These will be as follows:

  • Three Open competitions (3) -Print and Projected image classes
  • Three competitions on Set subjects (3) -Print and Projected image classes
  • The Committee Cup (1) -Prints
  • The Chair’s Challenge (1) -Projected Images
  • Annual competitions (3) -Colour print, Monochrome print & Projected image classes.

These competitions are open to all Full Members who have paid their annual subscription.

Unless indicated otherwise, judging for each competition will normally be by a judge from the panel published by the Midland Counties Photographic Federation.

By entering the competition, members accept that their images may be used to represent the club in Inter-club battles, external competitions & exhibitions (except where expressly requested otherwise).

Entries which are placed or gain points in competitions may be retained by the club for a period and displayed in Cosy Hall. Members will be expected to provide a non-watermarked file for inclusion on the Club website.

The League System

The 3 open competitions, the 3 competitions on set subjects and the Chair’s Challenge will be run in 2 groups, Intermediate Group and Advanced Group. When members enter their first competition of the season they will choose which group they wish to join and they will remain in that group for the rest of the season. There will be no automatic promotion or relegation between the leagues at the end of the season, but members who have excelled in the Intermediate group will be encouraged to move up to the Advanced group. If a Member wins an Intermediate group trophy in each of 2 consecutive years he/she will be expected to move into the Advanced Group in the following season.

Points will be awarded for the first 6 placed images in each group for the three open competitions and three set subject competitions. These points will count towards the club trophies.

Trophies will be awarded to:

  • Photographer of the Year (advanced)
  • Photographer of the Year (intermediate)
  • Print Photographer of the Year (advanced),
  • PI Photographer of the Year (advanced),
  • Print Photographer of the Year (intermediate)
  • PI Photographer of the Year (intermediate)

Points will be awarded as follows:-

General Rules

The general rules for each competition are as follows:

Prints and projected images may have been digitally manipulated but the individual components of each image must the member’s own work, and must have been taken using a camera.

Unless specifically stated otherwise, entries to all competitions can be in colour or monochrome. Normally the only competition when entries must be in monochrome is the Annual Monochrome Print Competition

Re-entry of images

Members may not re-enter an image in club competitions that is

  • The same as entered in a previous competition
  • The same as entered previously but in a different format (Projected image /print/monochrome print)
  • Very similar to an image previously entered, whether modified from the original image or from a different exposure.

Note that for the third Open Competition and the Annual Print & PI Competitions there are separate rules regarding re-entries.

The Competition Secretary has the right to exclude images if he/she considers that they have breached these rules.

Prints

Prints are to be mounted. The back of the mount should show the title of the print and the author’s name, and indicate the top of the print. If practical, the sequence number for that competition should also be marked on the back.

Thumbnails of prints being entered for club competitions must be uploaded to the Photo Entry website prior to the competition. Images of print submissions are not to be watermarked as when displayed during judging this often identifies the author. The thumbnails should be in the same format as the Projected Images 1400 pixels wide or 1050 pixels high (depending on the orientation of your image). Unless advised otherwise, the deadline for uploading images will normally be 10pm on the Sunday before the competition.

The maximum size of mounts is 50cm x 40cm.

The minimum size of images is 12.5cm x 17.5cm or 220 square cm if a different format is preferred.

Projected images

Projected images are to be submitted as files in JPG format (High quality).

Image size must be a width of 1400 pixels and a height of 1050 pixels (whichever is the greater)

Images should use sRGB colour space

Files should be named with the correct title and uploaded to the Photo Entry website prior to the competition. Unless advised otherwise, the deadline for uploading images will normally be 10pm on the Sunday before the competition.

The 3 Open Competitions and the 3 Set Subject Competitions will be judged in 2 classes – Prints and Projected Images. Members may submit up to 2 prints and 2 projected images for each competition.

(see Paragraph on re-entry of images and specific rules for Third Open Competition below).

The titles, authors name, and display sequence will be e-mailed to all members by the Competition Secretary before the competition. If members do not wish their name to be disclosed, they must advise the Competition Secretary at the time of entry.

Disqualification of Entries

Images may be disqualified for the following reasons

  1. Entry of a previously judged image
  2. Entry of a water marked image
  3. Print mount too large or print too small
  4. Incorrectly sized file uploaded to the Photo Entry website
  5. Entry of image into incorrect competition

If an ineligible file or image is noticed before the competition every effort will be made to contact the author and advise him/her to make the necessary changes to meet the eligibility criteria.

Competition Format

First and Second Open Competition. General rules apply. Members may submit images on any subject.

Third Open Competition. General rules apply. For this competition members may re-submit images that have not been placed in the first 6 places in previous club competitions.

Competitions on Set Subjects. General rules apply. The scope and parameters of the set subjects will be agreed at the annual programming meeting.

The Committee Cup. General rules apply. This is a print competition. The subject will be chosen by the committee

The Chair’s Challenge. General rules apply. The subject will be chosen by the Chair who will also decide any special rules or conditions. The winners will be those members who have submitted the best Projected Image in each of the two groups, Advanced and Intermediate as judged by the Chair. This competition will not count towards any other trophy.

Annual Competition. General rules apply except as follows. Members may submit a maximum of 2 colour prints, 2 monochrome prints and 2 projected images in the relevant classes. Members may re-submit images which have already been entered in previous competitions, except for images that have been placed in a previous NPC Annual Competition.

Trophies and Awards

Photographer of the Year. (Advanced & Intermediate Groups) (Shields)
This is the top trophy to be awarded to the Member in the Advanced & Intermediate groups who has achieved the highest combined score in the prints and PI categories

Print Photographer of the Year (Advanced & Intermediate Groups) (Shields)
Awarded to the member who has achieved the highest number of points in the print category at the 3 open and 3 set subject In-Club competitions.

Projected Image Photographer of the Year (Advanced & Intermediate Groups)(Shields)

Awarded to the member who has achieved the highest number of points in the projected image category at the 3 open and 3 set subject In-Club competitions.

Committee Cup (Cup)
Awarded to the member whose print comes first in the competition for the Committee Cup

Print of the Year (Shield)
Awarded to the member whose colour print is judged to be the best in the Annual Competition.

Monochrome Print of the Year (Shield)
Awarded to the member whose monochrome print is judged to be the best in the Annual Competition.

Monochrome images may be in black and white and shades thereof, or may be colour toned using a single colour (e.g. sepia). The addition of any further colour will move the image into the colour print category.

Projected Image of the Year  (Shield)
Awarded to the member whose projected image is judged to be the best in the Annual Competition.

Chair’s Challenge (Advanced & Intermediate Levels) (Shields)

Awarded to the members who come first in the Chair’s Challenge competition in each of the 2 classes.

Most Improved Photographer (Camera model)

Awarded by the Elected Officers of the Committee to the member in either the Advanced or the Intermediate groups who has improved most in the season. The winner must not have won any other trophy in that or previous seasons at the club.

Roger Price Shield

Awarded to the Member with the highest total of points in the Advanced group, who has not won Photographer of the Year, PI Photographer of the Year or Print Photographer of the Year.

Warrender Trophy (Shield)
Awarded to the Member with the highest total of points in the Intermediate group, who has not won PI Photographer of the Year or Print Photographer of the Year in the Intermediate group

Member of the Year (Shield)

This trophy is awarded by the Chairman to the non-committee member who has done most to support the club during the current season.

Audio Visual Anniversary Trophy (Shield)
Awarded to the Member who submits the winning audio visual sequence in the annual competition.
