Newport Photographic Club
The Club was founded in 1984 and aims to encourage and develop the photographic skills of it’s members. We meet at the Baptist Church hall in Water Lane, Newport, Shropshire at 7.45pm every Tuesday evening from September to June.
We have a full programme of competitions, workshops & practical evenings, visiting speakers, social evenings and other events. The current programme is available on the website.
At present we have about 70 members from the Telford & Wrekin area, with some members coming from Market Drayton, Gnosall and the surrounding villages. We cater for all levels of expertise from absolute beginner to experienced enthusiast. As part of the programme for encouraging our members to expand their photographic skills, we run Peer Review Groups and also have a Mentoring Programme.
The Mentoring Programme aims to team up those who want to take their photography a bit further, with one of the more experienced club members. The mentor can then advise on technical and photographic techniques and help develop the skills of the mentee.
The Peer Review Groups were formed to allow members to get informal comments and suggestions about their pictures from other members of the club. Groups of 8 – 10 members contribute their prints and these pass round the other group members for constructive comment.
Prospective members can come along to the club and pay nothing for the first 3 meetings. After that, if they decide they would like to join, membership is £10/year and a door fee of £2 is charged for each meeting they attend. This pays for the rent of the church hall and light refreshments on club night.
The club funds subsidise the entry costs if members would like to enter external competitions. We also subsidise the cost of mountboard to mount pictures for club competitions and the club purchases various items of equipment and tutorial CDs for loan to members. Last summer the club underwrote the coach cost of 2 outings to Llanberis and Liverpool.
We have recently had grants from “Awards for All” and Telford & Wrekin “Grass Roots Grants” to purchase a computer, digital projector, projection screen and other equipment.
The club takes a full part in supporting the local community with photographic displays and exhibitions.
New members are always welcome – why not come along and see what we do?
